Duluth, MN (Northland’s NewsCenter) --- A youth hockey tournament this weekend is expected to draw hundreds of people to the Northland.

The Holiday Inn & Suites Hockey Showcase tournament is underway at the DECC and Amsoil Arena.

USA Hockey's 16 and under boys play in a Tier-1 category which is considered to be the highest level of youth hockey.

The three day tourney includes three teams from across Minnesota as well as some from Canada and Wisconsin.

Organizers say the tournament helps to boost the Northland economy during the off season.

"We are down between the leaves, and the hockey season hasn't started full blown yet so we were able to have several opportunities to be able to bring these teams in, to host them, to help the hotels fill up a little bit,” Jerry Demeo, President of the Duluth Heritage Sports Center said.

The championship round is set for Sunday.
