Apples and Competition Abundant at Bayfield Apple Festival

Bayfield, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) -- The 51st annual Bayfield Apple Festival had an estimated 45,000 festival goers throughout the three-say weekend, according to the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to all the special events and amenities, visitors had the opportunity to see several apple-themed competitions throughout the weekend.

Those winners are as follows:

The Apple Pie and Dessert Contest on Friday, September 28th, had around 35 pie and dessert entries total. The six categories were judged by a three-person panel of community members.

Home-Baked Apple Dessert: 1st Place - Jerry Simons; Runner-up - Jenni Dietel.

Commercial Apple Dessert: 1st Place - Ginamarie Kinney Anderson & Emily Peterson from Wild Rice restaurant; Runner-up - Ginamarie Kinney Anderson & Emily Peterson from Wild Rice restaurant.

Home-Baked Creative Apple Pie: 1st Place - Jerry Simons; Runner-up - Kate Kasinski.

Youth Apple Dessert: 1st Place - Bethany Miller; Runner-up - Jamee Hansen.

Home-Baked All-American Pie: 1st Place - France Austin Miller; Runner-up - Lucia Damberg.

Commercial All-American Pie: 1st Place - Beth Kasinski from Erickson's Orchard; Runner-up - Beverly Ellestad from The Candy Shoppe.

The Apple Peeling contest took place on Saturday afternoon with a crowd present to witness the fine art of apple peeling.

Several of last year's winners returned to defend their titles and improve their records.

The results were as follows:

Adult Category:
1st Place - Scott Griffiths (Mayor of Washburn) from Washburn, WI with 207"
2nd Place - Brent McFarland (defending champion) from Manitowish Waters, WI with 201"
3rd Place - Pat Swelgin from Milwaukee, WI with 169"

Youth Category:
1st Place - Olivia McFarland from Manitowish Waters, WI with 91 1/2"
2nd Place - Clayton Miller from Fridley, MN with 27"

The parade enjoyed exceptional weather and attendance this year with over 70 units participating, including 14 high school marching bands, 10 of whom performed in the 500 student Mass Band finale.

The judging this year was done by news anchors Kevin Jacobsen, Adam Clark and Adam Lorch, representatives from the Apple Festival television sponsor, the Northland's NewsCenter.

They voted on winners for the best floats in three different categories - Orchard, Business/Organization and Judge's Choice. The 2012 results are as follows:

Orchards:
1st Place - Erickson's Orchard
2nd Place - Weber Orchard
3rd Place - Hauser's Superior View Farm

Business/Organization:
1st Place - Red Cliff Ojibwe Drum and Dance Troupe/St. Francis Church
2nd Place - Mt. Ashwabay Recreation Area
3rd Place - Unbridled Hope

Judges Choice: Erickson's Orchard

The Apple Dumpling Gang was presented on the Grandstand stage on Sunday afternoon, just prior to riding the antique BART trolley in the grand parade.

The Apple Dumpling Gang savings bond drawing winners were:

Brea Parrott of Duluth, MN
The Venetian Boat parade took place on Saturday evening in the Bayfield City Harbor.

Winners for the Venetian Boat parade were:
1st Place - Predestined
2nd Place - Time-A-Weigh
3rd Place - Blackhawk III

Stationary sailboat display winners were:
1st Place - HMS Loon
2nd Place - Snow Goose
3rd Place - Aura

Government boat parade winner was:
1st Place - USCG 45653 - Coast Guard Station Bayfield
The overall "Traveling Trophy" winner was HMS Loon.
The Bayfield Fire Department Apple Festival Raffle Winners were:

Next year's Bayfield Apple Festival will be October 4th - 6th, 2013.
