Washburn, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) -- The Bayfield Sheriff's Department is investigating a suicide incident.

Around noon on August 27, a deputy stopped a car at U.S. Highway 2 and State Highway 137 for a traffic violation.

Officials say the deputy had a short conversation with the male driver, who was the only one in the car.

The deputy checked the driver's license status at his squad and realized the driver had a warrant out for his arrest.

The driver would not comply with the officer after he was told this.

The deputy says that he noticed the driver reach for what he believed was a handgun hidden near the driver's seat, and fired the weapon into his own head.

Law enforcement officers, along with first deputy responding officers arrived to the scene, removed the driver from the vehicle and provided first aid CPR.

Ashland Fire Department paramedics transported the driver to Memorial Medical Center in Ashland.

The man was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The name of the driver has not been released pending completion of an investigation and notification of family.
