Poplar, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Near whiteout conditions on Wisconsin's Highway Two this morning is to blame for a seven–car pileup just outside Poplar.
The multi–car pile–up temporarily closed the eastbound lane.
The incident occurred just after 11 a–m, when a semi tanker carrying fuel was rear–ended by a vehicle near Northwestern School.
In a chain reaction, five other cars either collided with the initial two vehicles, or swerved off the road in an effort to avoid a collision.
Crews from the Poplar and Maple Fire Departments had to shut down the eastbound lane for close to two hours as they worked to pull cars out of the ditch, which forced traffic into one lane.
Maple Fire Chief Mike Lundeen says the accident happened during a period of heavy snow, and minimal visibility. For his crew, part of the battle is finding enough volunteers to secure the scene.
The Douglas Co. Sheriff's Dept. is heading the investigation into the crash.
