Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) - During the 2012 floods, the culvert and roadway along Marina Drive washed away in the 10–inch deluge, and the clogging that followed backed up floodwater into Central Park.

Then, on the one year anniversary of the flood, the new culvert also washed out following heavy rains.

Whereas the previous two designs left an exposed storm water drain, according to Superior Public Works staff, the latest design fully encases the newly–installed culvert in soil.

Crews say hydraulic studies show the new design is more efficient in handling future floodwater, and mimics the site's original, fully–enclosed brick storm drain design.

The new layout was granted a permit by the Wisconsin DNR before construction began.
