Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com)-- While Superior is already home to a marina featuring 420 slips, another harbor for lake vessels is in the works.
A company that resides at the end of Connors Point is hoping to start construction on the new marina in the near future, creating docks for smaller vessels.
AMI Consulting Engineers' proposed project will offer 25 to 30 slips in the first phase of its project and interest is already high.
"We're going to build a small break wall, and put some floating and shore side docks in," said Chad Scott with AMI. "We need four to seven of those spaces for our own purposes and the rest we're going to lease out. We have right now 16 people that are interested in a space that aren't currently in any spaces in Superior now."
If all goes well with the 25 to 30 slips at the end of Connors Point, there are plans to clean up the remnants of an old coal dock behind the offices of AMI.
"There is quite a bit of expense that goes with that so that is why we are calling that the second phase," said Scott. "It could happen in the future if we find there is a need."
Project leaders and Superior leaders are confident the harbor can coexist peacefully with Barker's Island Marina.
"We're serving a small boat market that I believe has not been fulfilled," said Scott.
"I don't see it hurting Barker's Island at all for the size boats they are going to have down there," said Robert Browne, Superior City Councilor that represents District 10.
Pending the acceptance of the last permit, construction could start as early as May.
