Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - While most inland lakes still have layers of ice, many rivers and streams are already open and freely–flowing.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds those looking to venture out on the water in canoes or kayaks to remember key safety requirements, like life-jackets and cell phones.
Conservation Officer Kipp Duncan says the potential risks with fast–flowing water are still present on shore: "Watch your kids. Make sure your kids aren't venturing near rivers, or streams, because if they get in that water—and the water is moving—there's not a whole lot they can do."
The average water temperature expected during this weekend is 33 to 36 degrees.
