Iowa Man Dead After Snowmobile Crash in Bayfield County

Bell, WI (NNCNOW.com) - An Iowa man died after the snowmobile he was driving hit a tree in Bayfield County Friday.

According to the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office, authorities were called to a snowmobile trail about two miles south of the village of Cornucopia in the town of Bell in northern Bayfield County around 3 p.m. Friday.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the 53-year-old man was dead when emergency responders arrived at the scene. Authorities say it was apparent that he died on impact with the tree.

Authorities say speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.

The driver was traveling with a group of nine other people who had left the Iron River area for trail riding earlier that day.

The Wisconsin DNR is investigating the crash.

Emergency response to the scene included the South Shore Ambulance Service, Herbster and Cornucopia Fire Departments, Wisconsin DNR, US Border Patrol and deputies from the Sheriff’s office.
