Late Night Fire at Allouez Taconite Facility in Superior

Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The cause of a late night fire at the Allouez Taconite Facility is under investigation by the BNSF Railroad.

The Superior Fire Department was called to a structure fire at the facility around 10 Monday night. Once on scene, crews found a fire in the conveyor belt system on dock #5. The conveyor belt system is 80 feet in the air and approximately 1000 feet long and is used to load the taconite onto ships at the dock.

Fire crews were hampered by the height of the structure, limited visibility from the smoke, and the weather, but eventually extinguished the flames. Officials left the scene around 3am.

No injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

The cause of the fire in under investigation by the BNSF Railroad with damage estimates pending.
