Sawyer County, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) --- One person is dead and another injured after a motorcycle and an SUV crashed into each other in Sawyer County on Chief Lake Road.

According to police, the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department received a report on Tuesday, September 25th of a motorcycle vs. SUV accident around 1:22pm.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a woman, the passenger of the motorcycle, had been injured in the crash. She was transported by helicopter to St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.

Authorities also found the apparent driver of the motorcycle as well. The driver was declared dead at the scene by the Sawyer County Coroner.

Occupants of the SUV sustained minor injuries and were checked out at a local hospital.

The accident remains under investigation. Names are being withheld pending notification of family.

The LCO Police Department, Sawyer County Sheriff's Department, LCO Fire Department and LCO First Responders all responded to the scene.
Motorcycle crashes in both Wisconsin and Minnesota are at record highs.

This year, Minnesota has seen 47 motorcycle deaths which eclipsed last year's death total of 42, according to the Department of Public Safety.

In Wisconsin there have been 79 motorcycle fatalities so far in 2012, compared to 70 at this same time last year.

DPS officials say an early start to the season due to mild weather, coupled with common crash factors, have propelled this year's grisly statistics.
