Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Douglas County investigators are seeking answers after a battered pick-up truck was pulled from Lake Superior.

Workers from RJS Construction found the remnants of the vehicle in about 26 feet of water during a dredging operation in the harbor.

They were working in the area between Midwest Energy and the General Mills Elevator "O" Slip.

The 1978 Ford Pickup had a Wisconsin license plate which reads BA 37 dash 546. The vehicle was last registered in 1991.

Investigators were able to trace the VIN number back to SafeCo Insurance Company, indicating they may have paid off on a claim.
SafeCo is checking their records.

Efforts to manually trace the license plate are underway because electronic records for Wisconsin registration do not go back that far in time.
