Iron County, WI(NNCNOW.com)--- Two Wisconsin lawmakers are calling on Governor Scott Walker to appoint members to a mining impact committee responsible for dispersing funds to the communities near the proposed G-TAC mine site in the Penokee Hills.
Wisconsin Senator Bob Jauch and Representative Janet Bewley have written a letter to Governor Walker, saying the state of Wisconsin has been reimbursed for work on the GTAC mine site, but the local governments are not getting any money.
Jauch says a mining impact fund has been inactive for the last ten years and can't be operational until Walker appoints new members.
The fund has $280,000 available that Jauch says should be going to the communities surrounding the proposed mine.
"I don't know why the governor is dragging his feet on this very important issue. He's done everything possible to help Gogebic bend the rules, and find loop holes, and make this project beneficial for them and he seems to be ignoring the local units of government," says Senator Jauch.
Jauch says Iron County asked Walker two years ago to appoint members to the committee, but that has not happened as of yet.
