Ashland, WI (Northlands NewsCenter)
-- An area of Ashland, once dominated by industry, and now contaminated by pollution, will be cleaned up.
Xcel Energy, in partnership with several government agencies, has signed a consent decree to begin remediation of the on land portion of the Ashland Lakefront Site.
The clean up will cost an estimated 40-million dollars.
Underneath the fill material of this land is contamination from gas and lumber, from wood industrial plants at the turn of the 20th Century.
Officials from Xcel energy say revitalizing the area won't be easy, but it's necessary to benefit the entire Ashland community.
"We were the first responsible party to set forward to and come to agreement of the clean up portion and will continue to work with the others responsible to negotiate their part of that clean up cost."
The other responsible parties are the City of Ashland, the Canadian National Railway, and the Soo Line Railroad Company.
