Ashland, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) --- With the recent outbreak of whooping cough around Ashland, WI and even into Bayfield, health officials are trying to combat anymore respiratory illnesses from spreading.

Even though the whooping cough outbreak has subsided, the public health administrator for the Ashland County Health and Human Services Department Cyndi Zach says that there is an unknown respiratory illness that is now plaguing the Ashland area.

Zach says that when patients come in with a respiratory problem, medical officials test for a number of common illnesses such as pertussis, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc., however many patients are coming back with negative results for these tests.

Zach says they have not been able to identify this mysterious respiratory illness spreading across Ashland, but more tests are needed.

Until then, Zach asks that everyone take every precaution needed to keep yourself and your family from catching any kind of respiratory illness. Wash your hands, cover your cough and stay home even if you have the cold.

Anyone with a respiratory illness should seek medical attention immediately.
