Centuria, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Authorities say the body of the missing Wisconsin toddler was recovered late Wednesday night inside the trunk of a car near the boy's home.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Isaiah Theis was located in the trunk of a locked vehicle around 10 Wednesday night. The owner of the car was about to remove the vehicle when a deputy asked to open the trunk and found Isaiah inside.
Officials say that initial reports indicated that while the vehicle had been looked into and the area around the car had been searched several times, searchers had been advised that the car was locked prior to Isaiah being reported missing and that it was unlikely at the time that he could have been in the vehicle.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office said in their news release: "The death of an otherwise healthy two-year old boy requires a complete and thorough investigation as to any possible cause, whether that cause is accident or criminal."
A full autopsy has been requested. Authorities say they are in the very early stages of their investigation and that it "would be inappropriate for anyone to speculate as to the cause and nature of death until that examination has been done."
Authorities would also like to thank the thousands of volunteers who assisted in the search for Isaiah. Registrations at the staging area indicate that almost 2,500 civilian volunteers helped in the search for the toddler on Wednesday.
