Super One liquor license denied by Superior City Council

Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Super One foods in Superiors east end won't be able to open a liquor store in its building.

Six votes from the Superior City Council were needed to grant Super One a liquor license.

Councilors voted 5-3 in favor of the motion but two councilors abstained from voting due to conflict of interest.

Under city ordinance, there's a limit as to how many liquor licenses can be issued.

Establishments that are issued licenses must be able to serve at least six patrons.

"All of ours are in conjunction with an operating tavern, it's part of one of the ordinances we had enacted, pursued that back in 1973-1974," Councilor Bob Finsland said.

Councilors who voted against the license say they want to keep control of how many establishments sell alcohol.

The new Super One opened last spring.
