Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) - After nearly five years of discussion, a new animal shelter is a giant step closer to reality in Superior.

The Superior Council voted to accept $410,000 in funding from Douglas County for the construction of the new shelter near Bear Creek Park.

Councilors also approved a seven step process outlined by Mayor Bruce Hagen, that if completed, would allow construction to begin as early as next spring.

One of those steps requires Animal Allies to mount a capitol campaign for gap funding needed for construction as well as operational expenses.

The City has earmarked $2.3 million for the shelter.

The new energy efficient adoption center will house animals from the city of Superior and across Douglas County.
