In the Northland, dads and old cars go together like walleye and wild rice hot dish.
A few hundred dads filled the parking lot of Belknap Plaza in Superior for the Twin Ports Mustang and Ford Club's Father's Day car show.

"Being Father's Day, a lot of dads and other fellows don't have much to do today." said Robert Raaflaub of the Ford Club.

This Henry Ford fueled Father's Day tribute went on despite a few showers and isolated thunderstorms.

"We had a good douser of a rain storm and I feel some rain drops starting right now." said Raaflaub.

That douser did put the kibosh on some Father's Day activities like the Proctor Speedway's Old Timers' Race featuring vintage cars and even a few vintage drivers.
In the beginning, getting the tradition of Father's Day going was as hard as crank starting a cold Model T.
The concept of a day for dads started in 1910 when Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to pay tribute to her Civil War veteran father.
Most Americans resisted the holiday for several decades claiming it was a blatant attempt to sell cards and gifts.
Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge and Lyndon Johnson tried to make it an official holiday but congress resisted.
Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
Now, lots of dads look forward to it.
Bruce Lorimor of Superior earned his first Father's Day this year thanks to a three month old daughter.

"It means a lot. The pride and joy of having that little girl at home and being responsible is a great feeling!" said Lorimor.

So, despite 60 years of resistance to a holiday honoring dads, the second annual Father's Day Ford Show went off with only a little rainy hitch.

"By the looks of things, we have more cars this year than last year so there's a good chance we may do it again on Father's Day next year at this location." said Raaflaub.

In Superior, Dave Anderson, KBJR 6 and Range 11.

Why is Father's Day in June?
Because that was the birth month of Sonora Smart Dodd's father.
