Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - 200 Northland–based bands, and dozens of the area's finest venues, are coming together under glasses of Fitger's Hempen Ale Sunday night to celebrate the opening night of the 16th annual Duluth Homegrown Music Festival.
"I Don Ness, Mayor of the City of Duluth, do officially proclaim April 27th to May 4th 2014 as Homegrown Week in the City of Duluth," said the beaming Mayor, glass of Hempen Ale in hand.
As is custom, Mayor Ness began the week-long music and arts celebration with a proclamation, and the tapping of the Homegrown Hempen Ale at Tycoons Alehouse.
The ceremonial keg represents a passing on of all things creative to the public, from Duluth's musicians and artists, to the Mayor himself.
This year 317 bands fought for a Homegrown slot, which shows just how far the festival has come since its humble beginnings as a birthday for Father Hennepin frontman Scott "Starfire" Lunt.
As of this weekend, the official Homegrown schedule of events has been released to the public.
