Superior, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) - Whether on TV or social media, the race for Wisconsin's U.S. Senate seat has seen its fair share of negative ads—many of which have focused on current hot topic issues, like the Affordable Health Care Act, and MediCare, along with who is saving—or spending—the most taxpayer money.
"It cost taxpayers $156 billion. Then, Tommy made millions working for a lobbying firm that represents drug companies," says one Baldwin for Senate TV ad.
"...paid for by a huge tax increase," is the end to one Tommy for Wisconsin YouTube ad.
Recent polls have shown Baldwin, the democrat–endorsed candidate and 7 term U.S. Congressswoman, ahead of Thompson—the former Wisconsin Governor, and Republican candidate. Last week, one Marquette University poll showed Baldwin ahead by 9 points.
Thompson blamed this on Baldwin's negative ads.
"She has never put up a positive ad since day one, on August 15th. So, it's bound to have an impact. But, right now, we're back up—we raised the money, we're back up. And now, you'll see a completely different direction," said Thompson last week.
But, these latest figures also came during a period where Republican Presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, was doing damage control after a leaked video showed him making controversial comments at a fund–raiser.
Even with Friday's debate looming—the first time both candidates will go head to head, on the podium, throughout the race—some political experts are predicting that this frequent rise and fall in statewide poll figures will be influenced by shifts the presidential race up to election day, on November 6th.
While the debate will take place on Friday, we will be broadcasting the debate on My 9, twice, on Saturday... once at three PM, and again at seven.
