Madison, WI (NNCNOW.com) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has approved Gogebic Taconite's request to do more exploratory drilling in the Penokee hills.

The mining company submitted an exploratory mining application to drill 15 holes on the site between Ashland and Iron County.

G–tac received an exploration license in the spring of 2013 and took samples from 8 holes last summer.

G–Tac officials say they hope to start drilling in February.

The company is planning on mining about four miles of iron ore in Northwest Wisconsin.
