Madison, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The Wisconsin DNR has approved Gogebic Taconite's application to begin exploratory drilling in the Penokee Range.

Gogebic Taconite plans to drill eight holes along a four mile stretch, just east of Mellen, Wisconsin.

This is the first exploration license issued under the state's new mining law that was enacted earlier this year.

Gogebic Taconite had originally applied to drill 13 holes, however company officials removed five of the test holes until they can gain additional information on storm water issues.

G-TAC hopes to have the mine up and running within the next five years.
