Wisconsin Lawmakers Prepare for Mining Discussions

September 11, 2012 Updated Sep 11, 2012 at 6:40 PM CDT

Madison, WI (Northlands NewsCenter)
-- The Wisconsin State Senate will take up the issue of mining later this month.

Lawmakers failed to reform mining laws earlier this year and Gogebic Taconite pulled their plans for a proposed iron ore mine on the Penokee Range, near Mellen Wisconsin.

A new senate committee will invite experts from the mining industry, environmental groups, and tribal leaders to go over Wisconsin's current mining law, and see what can be improved.

"The testimony will be very balanced but will be only informational in nature to lay the ground work from which mining legislation may be drafted in the future."

The first of the three committee hearings will be held September 18th.
