Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Wisconsin drivers are making their way across the state's roadways logging nearly 60 billion miles last year.
That's equal to about 317 round-trips between the earth and sun, the DOT calculated.
The 60 billion statewide vehicle miles logged last year is up 400 miles compared to 2012.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) has compiled these statistics and attributes the increase to a growth in commercial vehicle traffic as well as the state's population.
In the last 45 years, the state's population has increased from about 4.4 million in 1970 to 5.7 million today, which is about 30%, and in that same time period - the vehicle miles traveled has doubled, according to the DOT.
These calculations help plan and design specific highways, intersections or bridge improvements.
