Update: Victim Identified in Fatal Accident

Bay View, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Authorities have released the name of the woman who was found dead in Lake Superior near her home.

60 year old Jane Stamstad of Bayview, WI has found dead in Lake Superior after her friend had called a missing persons report for her.

On Tuesday, June 26th around 4:20pm, the Bayfield County Communication Center received a report of a missing 60 year old woman from the town of Bayview, WI, which is located between Washburn and Bayfield on Highway 13.

A friend of the Stamstad said that she had not seen her friend in several days and had gone to her house looking for her. The friend said that Stamstad's car, purse and cell phone were still in her house, however she could not locate her friend.

When deputies arrived to the missing woman's home, they noticed lawn and garden tools near the edge of the property on the Lake Superior side of her property.

Authorities then discovered a tree pruner about five feet over the ledge as well as a number of newly pruned branches.

Deputies climbed down about 90 feet on the cliff and found the Jane Stamstad dead in Lake Superior.

She was recovered with the assistance of the Washburn Fire Department and a boat of one of their members.

Authorities have determined that her death was accidental.

Responding to the incident along with Bayfield County Sheriffs’ deputies was the Washburn Fire Department, Washburn Area Ambulance and Bayfield County Coroner’s office.
