Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) - For more than 15 years, boat builders and collectors have taken to Barkers Island for the Wooden Boat Festival.

Among the new family friendly activities this year was a boat building tutorial on how to build boats in a quick and safe way.

The boat festival also opened its doors to aluminum, fiber glass, and custom made boats.

Families from across Northern Wisconsin voted for their favorite boats that were displayed on land and on water. Some of the displayed boats were more than 70 years old.

Organizers of the event said that these old boats triggered cherished memories.

"I was drawn to a guy – one of the first people that came in today – and the motor he had in the back of his boat was my favorite motor from when I was a kid," said boat restorer Howard Lehman, "I've gone back there three or four times because it just reminds me of my dad and what my dad had as a motor on his boat."

Organizers say that wooden boat show will live on into next year.
