Madison, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board has approved a lower bear hunting quota for the 2012 season.
The quota has been set at 4,600, which is down 12 percent from last year's harvest goal. About 9,015 permits will be given out this year.
Permit levels were not lowered with the decreased quota because the success rates of hunters have been lower in recent years.
Department of Natural Resources officials said this is important because the bear population is on the decline.
