Man found Dead in Chippewa Flowage

Hayward, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) - A 24 year old man from Schaumburg, Illinois drowned in the Chippewa Flowage near Eagle Nest Island.

On Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 1:50 p.m. the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a subject stating there was a drowning victim in the Chippewa Flowage near Eagle Nest Island.

A Department of Natural Resources Warden, Sawyer County Sheriff’s Deputies, Ambulance and Dive Team were dispatched.

The victim, Matthew Orland, 24 of Schaumburg, Illinois was recovered from 17 feet deep water at approximately 7:00 p.m. Orland was pronounced dead shortly after 7:00 p.m.

Subjects with Matthew stated he had jumped in the Chippewa Flowage from a pontoon boat. He attempted to get back to the boat and could not, as he was not an experienced swimmer. A friend jumped in the water and tried to rescue Matthew, but kept being pulled under the water. Eventually Matthew went under the surface and did not emerge again until he was recovered by Dive Team personnel.
