Body of Missing Canoeist Found in Boundary Waters

Atikokan, Ontario (NNCNOW.com) - Ontario Provincial Police have located the body of a 78-year-old Minnesota man missing in the Boundary Water Canoe Area.

Officers with the Rainy River District OPP responded to a distress call from two people on June 2nd initiated by a SPOT locator in the area of Basswood Lake, near the Canadian border.

Officers responded with the assistance of a pilot and aircraft in an attempt to locate two people within Quetico Provincial Park.

On June 3rd, members of the Northwest Region Emergency Response Team assisted by the Ministry of Natural Resources located 75-year-old Elaine Barber of Minnetonka, MN.

A search effort on the ground and underwater continued for 78-year-old Richard Barber.

Police located Barber's body Thursday in Basswood Lake.

An investigation revealed that the couple were on a canoe trip when their canoe capsized.
