Duluth, MN (Northlands NewsCenter)
-- Northland mushers can dust off their harnesses and start getting their dogs back in shape for the debut of a new sled dog race in Duluth.
Thanks to one of the cancelled John Beargease marathon's biggest sponsors, a new race will take place at the beginning of March.
The Subaru Fun Run will stretch 50 miles in the Northern Portion of Duluth along a snowmobile trail, starting in Pike Lake and ending here close to Billy's bar in Duluth.
A shotgun start at noon on March 4th will kick off the race for anyone with a team of dogs and a sled.
The folks over at the Miller Hill Subaru have had this project in the works for a couple of weeks since the Beargrease was canceled.
They wanted to rally the community to have a fun event but more specifically, they wanted to rally the mushers who give them business.
"That's kind of our core group of customers. They are outdoors people; Outdoor activity enthusiasts. Subaru has always been a sponsor of the beargrease and it's something we want to keep going"
Lack of snow could be a problem.
There is no way around a shortage of snow.
The people at Subaru say if trail conditions don't improve during February, another sled dog race will have to be canceled
