Duluth, MN (Northlands NewsCenter)
-- A new Duluth Sled Dog race is in the works after last week's cancellation of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

One of the Beargrease's sponsors told the Northland's NewsCenter today a new 20-mile race is being organized with help provided by some area mushers.

The March fourth race would run in the northern area of Duluth, starting by Pike Lake and ending off the Riley Road where the Beargrease traditionally begins.

Beargrease representatives want this race to happen for their musher's sake.

"Mushers are upset that there are not good trail conditions and that the beargrease was canceled and if somebody else has better luck putting on a safe trail, more power to them"

According to a gun flint trail blog, another race could take place at the end of January.

That race would begin January 30th.
