DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - Four adults and a child are safe after a boat capsized on Fish Lake near Driftwood Estates Campground late Sunday evening.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Department received a call a little after 9 p.m. that a boat had capsized.

The four adults and seven-year-old girl had been in the 15-foot fishing boat when it began to have motor trouble and fill with water.

Officer Wade Rasch says the boat was probably overloaded.

"People moved towards the aft portion of the boat to work on the motor, and it started taking on water quite rapidly and tipped upwards and sank aft first," said Rasch.

The party put on life jackets and swam to a nearby island where they waited for about an hour in hopes that a passing motorist would see them and rescue them.

When no boats went past, two of the adults swam to shore and called for help.
