On Sunday afternoon, a 30 foot motor boat owned by a man from South Range struck a reef while returning from the Split Rock area.
The boat owner made a distress call with a marine radio that was overheard by Minnesota Conservation Officer Dan Thomasen. CO Thomasen answered the call and was told there were 4 people on board and that the vessel was taking on water. Thomasen then called for the Coast Guard and Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Squad.
Rescue Squad members launched a small boat from the rocky shoreline near Grand Superior Lodge. They then rescued the 4 people and brought them to safety. The boat was left on the reef with about 4 feet of water inside her. The boat will removed when salvage equipment can be arranged by the owner.
