Moose Lake, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - Whether it's the first robin or a fresh crop of crocus, the signs of spring can come in many forms. This video was shot in Moose Lake, as a pileated woodpecker snacked on left over crab apples from last summer.
Almost the size of a crow, the pileated wood pecker is the largest of its breed in North America.
It is known for its bright red head and wild laugh, and was the inspiration for the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker.
Over the winter, the apples have attracted numerous deer and a flock of partridge.
This male wood pecker was first spotted last week.
He has returned to the tree several times to feast.
