Lutsen Mountain (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The DNR is allowing Lutsen Mountain to continue drawing water from the Poplar River to make snow.
The Minnesota DNR will issue a permit to Lutsen Mountain Corp. to continue using the water from the Poplar River for snow making, despite the low water flow of the river.
The DNR believes that not allowing Lutsen Mountain to draw from the river could have disastrous economic impacts to the local community if Lutsen is forced to shut down.
There were some concerns about trout population if Lutsen Mountain was allowed to continue drawing water from the Poplar River, however the DNR assures that a very small number of trout will be impacted by Lutsen Mountain's operations.
Lutsen Mountain is required to cease all drawing of water from the Poplar River in 2016.
The draft permit and additional background information can be found on the DNR’s website at www.mndnr.gov/input/issues/poplar_river/index.html.
