MPCA Stormwater Permit Violations

November 10, 2010 Updated Nov 10, 2010 at 9:54 PM CST

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recently penalized the Cook County/Grand Marais Joint Economic Development Authority and KGM Contractors $40,000 for stormwater violations at its Cedar Grove Business Project site in Grand Marais.

Site inspections conducted between December 2006 and October 2007 indicated the parties were not following permit requirements designed to control erosion and sediment at the construction site.

As a result, contaminated stormwater discharged to nearby wetlands, the Grand Marais municipal sewer system and Lake Superior.

The parties corrected the site's erosion problems and spent another
80,000 dollars to mitigate environmental degradation under the Gunflint
Trail.
