Ely, MN (Northlands NewsCenter)
-- Now that bear hibernation season is about to come to an end we'll soon get our first look at two new bear cubs in Ely.

Thousands watched live on the internet as Jewel the Bear gave birth two months ago.

Since their January birth Herbie and Fern, the cubs have been doing what most bear cubs do.

"The cubs have been in there just growing like mad, nursing like mad. It's amazing how much they nurse"

One developing faster than the other.

"Herbie seems to be a little more advanced at this point then Fern is but she will likely catch up. They both look really good."

And all three, Jewel, Herbie and Fern are providing the scientific community an insight into the hidden world of bear hibernation using cameras and the internet.

"Trying to find out what percentage of the time they sleep, are they rearranging their bedding, are they nursing...stuff like that"

But doctor Rogers says a warm weather on top of a dry spring could present serious problems later in the summer.

"It was a drought enough last summer the berries shriveled up and I'm just thinking boy...We are heading into to a drought this winter and if the spring is like this...it could be a bad food year for the bears"

A bad year, Dr. Rogers say, could have the hungry bears finding food in other places.,

Doctor Rogers will receive all the data collected on Jewel, Fern, and Herbie after they leave the den.
