WLSSD Announces Rate Hikes

September 29, 2010 Updated Sep 29, 2010 at 11:34 AM CDT

The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District Board of Directors approved its 2011 operating and capital budgets at its regular Board meeting on Monday.

The budget includes an overall wastewater rate increase of 2.78% over 2010 and a 0% increase in the solid waste management fees collected to support solid waste programs.

The 2.78% wastewater increase is significantly lower than the 5-6% increase projected three years ago for 2011.

The impact of WLSSD’s rate increase on homeowners and businesses in the region will vary.

WLSSD charges each community and industry based on usage. Each community determines whether or not they will pass this increase on to its customers. Charges to individual residents will vary from one community to another because each city is responsible for billing its own customers. Costs to treat wastewater through WLSSD represent only a portion of each customer’s bill.
