Two Harbors, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) -- 200 paper lanterns will light up the night sky floating over Lake Superior this weekend.

It's part of the city's annual Heritage Festival...but new this year...a "Wishing Lantern Launch."

The "Wishing Lantern" traditionally celebrates new beginnings, new opportunities, or new relationships.

Organizers say the lanterns are biodegradable, and that each person who launches a lantern will also get the opportunity to write down their own wishes on it before sending it off.

"These lanterns are rice paper and bamboo and they have a wax fuel cell and you light the fuel cell and the lantern launches," said Craig Rhode, co-organizer.

"It's ushering in the new season, new beginnings, or just wishes," said Brian Borglum, co-organizer.

You can purchase lanterns online ahead of time if you want to be sure to get one.

All of the proceeds will benefit various community groups...ranging from the Humane Society to the local food shelf.
