Cherry School Mourning Over Teen Death

By KBJR News 1

It was a sad day at the Cherry School near Iron.

Two students were involved in a car accident near the school yesterday afternoon.

16 year old Caitlin Calgaro was killed and 15 year old Brianna Smith is in critical condition at St. Mary's hospital in Duluth.

Chris Buckley spoke to school officials about how students and teachers are dealing with the loss.

The flag in front of the Cherry School flew at half staff on Tuesday... the day after a car accident killed one student and critically injured another.

The schools crisis team met before school Tuesday morning and the districts superintendent talked to students when they arrived.

He says they were reaching out to each other.

"A lot of people were grieving, as to be expected. A lot of caring and concern for each other, people are quite concerned about each other, especially the families of those two girls."

Grief counselors were on hand for students and staff.. and will be as long as they're needed.

"Counselors from our own schools, St. Mary's in Duluth, we have grief counselors, we have ministers that come in to help, Range Mental Health Professionals will provide support because not all the support you need is on the first day, and we're going to be there to support all our students and staff as long as we need to."

School officials say the two girls were on their way to an after school softball game.

they were hit broadside by a westbound car on Highway 37.

Both passengers in that car were treated and released.

Police say the accident investigation will take several months.

They do a complete reconstruction on all fatal crashes.
