Rock Concert Boosts Range Economy

By KBJR News 1

This weekend's weather was perfect for an outdoor rock concert.

The folks on the Vermilion Iron Range held one last night and Dave Anderson tells us it was a major boost to the economies of several communities.

"Oh yeah! How you doing Tower?"

Before Warrant and Alice Cooper could take the stage at the Bluesberry Jam at Fortune Bay in Tower, the stage had to be set up.

That's a big job.

"It takes two and a half days to set the stage and we bring in 15 people to help set up and it's quite an endeavor and that's why we only do one concert outside in a year."

Even I had a small job as part of the backstage crew.

"My job is to watch a rain gauge as part of the rain insurance for the show."

With high pressure in place, my rain gauge didn't measure a drop.

"You couldn't ask for a better day. It's beautiful."

"It's hot tonight. Too hot for talking."

It did get hot in Tower on Sunday with temperatures pushing into the upper 80's but that didn't keep people from coming to the Alice Cooper show.

"There was a guy we met here today who drove up from Chicago specifically to come to this."

According to staff at Fortune Bay, that injection of outside cash is good for the economy of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa who own the casino plus the communities of Tower and Soudan.

"I've been speaking to people who've come from the Twin Cities and the Bemidji area and all over so it's a good day for the local economy."

It was also a good day for Fortune Bay's golf course.

When Alice Cooper isn't on stage as a macabre rocker, he's on the links as a duffer.

He played the Fortune Bay course before the show.

"He thought the course was amazing.

And, three thousand Northlanders thought the Warrant and Alice Cooper Show was amazing and are already looking forward to next year's concert.

Bob Villebrun of Fortune Bay says he doesn't know who will headline next year's show but admits it will be hard to top Alice Cooper.
