LGA Cuts Make Consolidations Appealing

By KBJR News 1

Two more Iron Range towns may be combining city services.

Due to Local Government Aid cuts, Aurora and Hoyt Lakes are considering sharing a police force.

This isn't the first time Hoyt Lakes and Aurora have considered consolidating law enforcement.

But now, Local Government Aid cuts have made it more necessary than ever.

The Hoyt Lakes Police Chief and City Administrator say this would be a win–win for both towns.

"It only makes sense to look to consolidation to save money for the community and taxpayers," said Hoyt Lakes Police Chief Steve Stoks.

"Cooperation is always a good thing and saving money is a good thing," said Hoyt Lakes City Administrator Richard Bradford.

The Saint Louis County Sheriff's Department has served Aurora for more than 30 years.

If the consolidation happens, the deputies would be moved throughout the county.

Stoks and Bradford are planning a study to determine how much money would be saved along with the manpower needed.

"We'll be looking at a budget, at an agreement that both communities can live with and scheduling and how to provide the same level of service to both communities," said Bradford.

"Nobody would lose their jobs and maybe a couple of people would get hired," said Stoks.

The towns Gilbert and Biwabik have already combined services, and Stoks says it has been a success.

"I think with the tax base we have in both communities to keep it down we're going to have to start consolidating," Stoks said.

The Hoyt Lakes Police Department could begin serving Aurora as soon as April first.
