Agreement Reached To Keep 13 Steamships Afloat

A compromise on Capitol Hill will keep 13 steamships afloat on the Great Lakes.

The Environmental Protection Agency is set to begin implementing new rules aimed at reducing sulfur emissions.

It would limit sulfur emissions from ships within 200 nautical miles of U.S. coasts including the Great Lakes.

Tuesday U.S. Congressmen Jim Oberstar and Dave Obey reached a compromise with the EPA to exempt the Great Lakes steamships from the new rule.

They say the new rule could devastate the Northland's shipping industry because steamships can't burn low-sulfur fuel without risking engine explosion.
