H1N1 Hits Iron Range

By KBJR News 1

H1N1 is hitting the Iron Range.

According to the Hibbing Daily Tribune, a significant number of students in the Chisholm School District were absent this week.

Ten percent of students in the Chisholm school district were out sick this week, raising a red flag...but it's not just in Chisholm.

One Eveleth parent says absences have been high at schools there, too.

"My son came home one day and said there were 9 people missing today," said Tammy Erickson.

Tammy fears that her daughter may have the H1N1 virus.

"She's had a low–grade fever, but then it kept on getting higher. But with the motrin and stuff hers stayed down. Because my nieces and nephew had a confirmed case in Hermantown, they live in Hermantown, so I kind of knew what to expect," she said.

Meanwhile, at health facilities and nursing homes around the Iron Range, restrictions are being set for visitors.

Anyone with a fever, cough or sore throat is asked not visit their loved ones until they are symptom free.

"We look for signs of sniffling, symptoms of coughing, aching, soar throat," said Eveleth Fitzgerald Nursing Home Administrator Paul Fischer.

Fischer says those asked not to visit residents are understanding of the circumstances.

Until the shortage of the H1N1 vaccine ends, flyers on doors will continue to remind everyone not to spread symptoms.

No word yet on when the H1N1 vaccine will be available on the Iron Range.
