Deer Hunting More Than A Sport

Unemployment rates on the Iron Range have made deer hunting more a necessity than a fun sport.

With nearly 900 workers at Hibbing Taconite and Keetac still laid off, unemployment rates on the Iron Range are among the highest in the state.

While the time off work is giving people more time to deer hunt, it's also causing anxiety about the importance of shooting a deer to feed the family this winter.

"The need for food is certainly there and they can spend more time hunting and fill that freezer," said DNR area wildlife manager Tom Rusch.

"Hoping that one will walk by and you'll get the opportunity to take a deer to have food," said hunter Richard Sutton.

Food is an important part of the hunt but its also a way of life for many Iron Rangers.

"It's the culture up here, people are born and raised and grow up with it. It's that time of year, it's November, it's our annual white tail deer run there's a lot of excitement, comradery, it's time together with family and friends," said Rusch.

"Just got one this morning so I'm happy," said Sutton.

DNR Wildlife Manager Tom Rusch says the average take home is one deer per family.

An average sized deer would provide about 50 pounds of meat.

hunting IS NOT A SPORT...a sport requires someone winning and someone who actually is in shape and is getting physical activity
