Safety First for Northshore Mining

Silver Bay, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) -- Northshore Mining receives the 2011 Cliffs' President's Safety Award for the 10th time.

Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. announced the award Thursday and it was was presented last week .

Each year, the award is given to an operation that displays the best safety performance among Cliffs' operations.

Jim Korpi, the General Manager of Northshore Mining, says that they're honored to have received the award and that they have worked hard to ensure each employee has the tools and knowledge to work in a safe manner.

Northshore Mining achieved the award by ending the year with the lowest percentages in the following categories: all injury frequency rate, total severity rate, totals reportable incident rate and total lost time incident rate.

Northshore mining has received the Presiden't Safety award 10 times since its inception in 1998 and overall, the safety performance at all Cliffs Natural Resources' operations has improved 15% in 2011.
