Sandstone, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Authorities have released the name of the felon who was shot in the hand after he resisted arrest from a Pine County Deputy.

Louis Ralph Workman, Jr. is currently being held in reference to a felony warrant after officials took him into custody following Sunday night's incident.

Authorities were attempting to arrest Workman at a home off Water Lilly Road around 5:45 p.m., however officers say he resisted and fled in a vehicle.

Workman allegedly drove towards the officers who were on foot in slippery conditions, in the path of a speeding car.

According to authorities, the officers fired shots at the vehicle, fearing for their safety, with one of the bullets hitting Workman in the hand.

Workman then allegedly continued driving away northbound on Wildlife Road with officers in pursuit. About one mile from the scene of the shooting, the suspect’s vehicle was forced into the ditch and he was taken into custody.

"The State Trooper was able to perform a pit maneuver and put that suspect into the ditch,” Sheriff Robin Cole of Pine City, said. “At that time he was arrested, given first aid and transported by ambulance to the Sand Stone Hospital, and then to the Duluth Hospital."

Workman was transported to Essentia Hospital in Sandstone his gunshot injury to his hand. The officers involved were not injured.

The Minnesota Bureau Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation at the request of the Pine County Sheriff, with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol and the Pine County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Cole says he believes the shots fired by authorities were according to protocol.

Authorities say that Workman has several aliases and is currently being held in reference to a felony warrant with more charges pending.
