Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.coM0 --- The St Louis County Board may be one step closer to filling the seat left vacant by late commissioner Steve O'Neill.
Tuesday marked the final day that candidates can file for the 2nd district commissioner position.
Five candidates have shown interest in the seat so far.
There will be a two day waiting period after Tuesday to allow any one on the list to withdraw their nomination.
Since O'Neil's death, other commissioners have stepped up to help residents in his district with any problems they may be having.
"We've tried to do the best we can and if there's constituents in that district they can come to any one of us commissioners and we will help, but it still isn't the same thing as having the person from the district that understands the needs of the district in East Duluth," said County Commissioner Chris Dahlberg.
Commissioner Dahlberg says the board could make a decision on September 10 to either fill the seat or leave it vacant.
They are waiting until September 10 to make sure that anyone that they appoint in the interim won't turn around and run for the office.
A primary election will be held in November with the top two candidates advancing to a special election in January.
