Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Four people escaped an early morning apartment fire Wednesday.

Duluth Firefighters were called to an apartment building at 2713 W 4th St.

Firefighters responded to the fire located on the first floor of the building. The fire also advanced to the second floor and into the attic of the residence.

Neighbors say the fire wasn't easily visible from the front, but large flames were visible behind the complex.

"Well, I was peaking out the window at first. I see smoke a little bit, so I went out front to see a little more and it was a lot more smokier. I go out the door on my back deck and the whole place was lit on fire", said neighbor Gordon Hey.

Neighbors say this is the second time they've seen this building on fire.

The Red Cross is assisting the four residents of the building in a shelter tonight.

Initial damage to the structure is estimated at $100,000.

The Duluth Fire Marshall's office is investigating the fire at this time.
