(DULUTH,MN)---Five Alumni have been selected for the Duluth East High School Hall of Fame based on their contributions to the school, community, academic excellence, athletic excellence and contributions to the arts.

This is the first time in the school's history to have a Hall of Fame.

One of the five inducted, was Betty Marciniak-Ahrendt, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

Marciniak-Ahrendt is being recognized for writing the Duluth East High School song, titled "The Birchen."

"Oh, I just couldn’t believe it, I couldn’t believe it—I'm telling you. Because, like I said, everybody I tell it to is congratulating me, you know. So, it's quite an honor," Betty Marciniak-Ahrendt, Hall of Fame recipient, said.

Marciniak-Ahrendt wrote the song when she was in junior high school in the 1930's.

Students have been singing "The Birchen" ever since.
